The joy of being a cherished child of God in the midst of a challenging world is what Pastor Goeres helps us celebrate.  His personal mission statement is: “reflect the presence of God through my living and sharing so that as I walk with others they may be in awe of the Spirit’s flame within them which guides, comforts and causes thanksgiving.” In addition to sharing the Good News, Pastor Goeres enjoys family time with his wife Neva and their adult children Gloria and Richard. He also enjoys their dogs, exercise, bicycle riding, motorcycle riding, working outdoors and exploring new places.  Pastor Goeres has visited all 50 States, lived in Japan and gained great insight on trips to Tanzania and Israel. Pastor Goeres earned a BS in Psychology from James Madison University, an M-Div. from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from Drew University. Pastor Goeres was ordained on June 17, 1984 and called to serve as pastor of  Holy Cross, Lincolnton, NC.  He has also served as  Assistant to the Bishop in the NC Synod, Senior Pastor of Incarnation, Columbia, SC, and Senior Pastor of St. Paul, Strasburg, VA.

After graduating from Appalachian State University with a B.S. in Psychology, Pastor Lauren served for a year (2005-2006) in Edinburgh, Scotland through the Young Adults in Global Mission of the ELCA.  The following summer she headed to Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, IA where she graduated in 2011 with a Masters in Divinity.  After receiving her first call from First Lutheran, she was ordained on July 16th, 2011.  Walking together in the love of Christ and sharing with one another our stories of faith in daily life is one of the greatest joys of Pastor Lauren’s ministry.  The time spent with others in relationship and conversation makes all the “behind the desk work” worthwhile.  She also enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading, singing, and being out in God’s creation.

Pastor Paul is originally from California where he grew up as a pastor’s kid, moving up and down the west coast quite frequently.  At a very early age he heard God’s call to ordained ministry and has continued to follow that call from San Diego State University, where he graduated with what he considers a double major in History and Surfing, to Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.  In 2008 he was ordained by Bishop April Larson in the La Crosse Area Synod where he served his first call as pastor to both Kickapoo United and Peace Lutheran Churches.  In seminary Pastor Paul met his wife Pastor Lauren and in 2011 the two of them, along with their one year old son, moved from Wisconsin to Virginia to begin their new call here at First Lutheran Church.  Every day Pastor Paul is amazed by the grace and love he is surrounded with and lives to share and recognize it with all of Gods children.

I grew up in the Wrigleyville neighborhood of Chicago (GO CUBS!). It was while pursuing a masters degree in Nursing Administrative Services at Loyola University that I became interested in Parish Nursing. Parish nursing had its beginnings in the Chicago area, and so I grew up professionally as Parish Nursing was developing into the nursing specialty it is today. Parish nursing is an extension of the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. We concern ourselves with the physical, spiritual and emotional well-being of our congregation. I am an active member of FLC and have three young sons and a nurse husband that I have recruited to assist in this ministry. (I'm still trying to talk him into the quilting group.)
